A DIFFERENT WAY TO EXPERIENCE PORTUGAL

This proposed journey has been designed for travelers who want more than simply seeing Portugal through the window of a tour bus.

Over 16 days, our small group will travel from the historic streets of Porto into the vineyard-covered Douro Valley during harvest season, through colorful canal towns and medieval villages, into Lisbon and the palaces of Sintra, across the countryside of the Alentejo and finally to the cliffs, beaches and blue Atlantic waters of the Algarve.

Along the way, we propose to paint traditional Portuguese azulejos, travel deep into the Douro Valley by river, participate in the traditions of the grape harvest, taste Portuguese food and wine, cook a Portuguese meal, explore palaces and historic cities, discover Portugal's cork and olive traditions, meet the magnificent Lusitano horse and cruise beneath the dramatic cliffs of the Algarve.

But we also believe a great journey needs something many traditional tours leave out:

That's why Portugal 2027 combines carefully selected included experiences with our Explore Your Way concept, giving you the freedom to pursue the things that interest you without requiring you to research an unfamiliar destination from scratch.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THIS PROPOSED ITINERARY

This itinerary represents the experiences, accommodations, transportation and activities Elsewhere Tours & Travel proposes to include in Portugal 2027.

Because final September 2027 dates and reservations have not yet been secured, all flights, hotels, tours, activities, meals, admissions, transportation arrangements and other experiences described in this proposal are subject to availability at the time sufficient traveler commitments and required payments are received and reservations can be confirmed.

Many of the experiences proposed for this journey are small-group, seasonal or limited-capacity experiences. Availability cannot be guaranteed until reservations have been confirmed by the individual suppliers.

If a listed experience, hotel, transportation service or other component becomes unavailable before it can be reserved, Elsewhere Tours & Travel may substitute a comparable experience, property or service when reasonably available. Any material changes to the proposed itinerary will be communicated to confirmed travelers.

Early commitment will be especially important for this journey. Delayed commitment may result in limited availability, supplier price changes or the need to substitute an experience described in this proposed itinerary.

Welcome to Porto

After arriving at Porto Airport, we'll collect our luggage and transfer together to our hotel in Porto.

We'll have time to settle in before beginning a relaxed introduction to the city that will be our home for the next three nights.

Our first look at Porto will introduce us to its historic center and may include areas such as Ribeira, the Douro riverfront, Rua das Flores, São Bento and views across the river toward Vila Nova de Gaia.

The exact timing of today's activities will depend upon our international flight arrival.

There will be time for an independent lunch before one of our proposed Signature Experiences.

By now you'll have had an introduction to Porto. Today, decide which Porto interests you most.

Possibilities may include Livraria Lello, Palácio da Bolsa, Igreja de São Francisco, Porto Cathedral, Clérigos Tower, Mercado do Bolhão, Vila Nova de Gaia, port wine cellars, museums, shopping, river experiences and Porto's cafés, bakeries and restaurants.

Build a full sightseeing day.

Choose one or two places and wander. Have a long lunch.

Return somewhere you loved yesterday. Or simply enjoy being in Portugal.

DAY 5

JOURNEY INTO THE DOURO

Porto → Pinhão by River

Today we won't simply drive into Portugal's famous wine country.

We'll travel into it by river.

Our proposed two-day Douro Harvest program begins at the Vila Nova de Gaia waterfront. After boarding, we'll begin our full-day journey upstream toward Pinhão.

Breakfast will be served aboard as Porto gradually gives way to the landscapes of the Douro.

Along the way, we'll pass through the locks at Crestuma-Lever, Carrapatelo and Régua, experiencing the engineering that allows boats to travel deep into this dramatic river valley.

LUNCH ON THE DOURO

Lunch is included aboard as we continue toward Pinhão, surrounded by increasingly dramatic hillsides and vineyard landscapes.

Upon reaching Pinhão, we'll disembark and transfer to a charming hotel in the Douro region.

DINNER IN THE DOURO

Dinner is included at the hotel.

The evening is then free to relax and enjoy being in the heart of Portugal's wine country.

DAY 6

THE DOURO VINDIMA

★ ELSEWHERE SIGNATURE EXPERIENCE

Today is devoted to one of Portugal's great seasonal traditions: the vindima, or grape harvest.

After breakfast at our Douro hotel, we'll transfer to a regional wine estate.

Our proposed harvest experience begins with a welcome at the estate, including Moscatel and traditional Portuguese music.

Then we'll head toward the vineyards.

INTO THE VINEYARD

Depending upon the natural harvest cycle and vineyard conditions at the time of our visit, our experience may include participating in grape cutting and helping transport harvested grapes toward the traditional wine-making process.

WINE, FOOD & TRADITION

We'll enjoy a guided wine tasting accompanied by appetizers, followed by an included traditional Douro lunch.

Then comes one of the most memorable traditions of harvest season:

GRAPE STOMPING

We'll roll up our pants, step into the lagar and participate in traditional grape stomping ourselves, treading the grapes with our feet to the rhythm of live Portuguese harvest music.

This is a hands-on harvest experience, not simply a demonstration.

A tasting of Douro liqueur wines is also proposed as part of the experience.

RETURN TO PORTO

After our harvest experience, we'll transfer to Pinhão Station and return to Porto by train.

We'll arrive in Porto in the evening and check into our hotel. No additional group activities are planned tonight.

After two very full days in the Douro, the evening is yours to rest.

The Douro harvest is agricultural and seasonal. Specific vineyard activities depend upon the natural grape-growing and harvest cycle.

Grape cutting/harvesting cannot be guaranteed. If the natural harvest has progressed beyond the grape-cutting stage at the time of our visit, the experience may include grape stomping and other harvest traditions without grape cutting.

CANALS TO COIMBRA

Porto → Aveiro → Coimbra

After breakfast, we'll leave Porto and begin our journey south. Our first destination is colorful Aveiro.

Known for its canals, Art Nouveau architecture and colorful moliceiro boats, Aveiro gives us approximately three hours to explore independently rather than simply stopping long enough for a photograph.

Today we'll leave Lisbon for one of Portugal's most extraordinary destinations.

Our proposed itinerary includes admission to colorful Pena Palace and its surroundings.

Perched high above Sintra, the palace looks almost imaginary against the surrounding landscape.

HISTORIC SINTRA

We'll have time for an independent lunch and exploration in historic Sintra.

This is also an opportunity to try some of Sintra's famous pastries, including travesseiros and queijadas. Then we'll continue to somewhere wonderfully unusual.

QUINTA DA REGALEIRA

Gardens. Grottos.

Underground passages. Symbolic architecture. Hidden spaces.

And the famous Initiation Well.

CABO DA ROCA

After lunch, we'll travel toward Portugal's Atlantic coast and stop at dramatic Cabo da Roca.

A NOTE ABOUT AVAILABILITY

Portugal 2027 is currently a proposed itinerary.

The experiences described here have been researched and selected to create the journey we would like to offer. However, the trip has not yet been contracted, and no experience should be considered confirmed until Elsewhere Tours & Travel receives sufficient traveler commitments and payments and receives confirmation from the individual suppliers.

Seasonal and limited-capacity experiences, including the Douro Harvest program, cooking experience, Signature Experiences, hotel accommodations, admissions and small-group activities, may sell out.

Final pricing may also be affected by airfare, hotel, transportation, currency and supplier pricing available at the time reservations are made.

The earlier the group is able to make a decision and commit, the greater our ability will be to secure the proposed experiences and accommodations.

If a proposed component is no longer available, Elsewhere Tours & Travel will make reasonable efforts to secure a comparable alternative and will communicate material itinerary changes to confirmed travelers.
